The Mater also offers general surgery and includes a day surgery centre, intensive care, endoscopy unit, renal dialysis centre and a chemotherapy unit, all providing the latest in medical technology.

Originally founded by the Sisters of Mercy North Sydney, the Mater now forms part of the Sisters of Charity Health Service and operates as a core facility of SV&MHS.

The Hospital has a reputation for excellence in cancer research, with the generosity of donor support enabling the Mater to develop a dedicated cancer research program. The Mater’s investment in cancer research complements its focus on the delivery of holistic care for patients with cancer and their families.

In 2005 a significant donation from a Friend of the Mater paved the way for the construction of a purpose-built facility to house the Sydney Melanoma Unit (SMU). The new facility will house clinical treatment areas, research laboratories and teaching facilities. It will link the SMU to existing cancer treatment infrastructure at the Mater, establishing a melanoma facility that provides coordinated clinical care, undertakes research and provides training for clinicians in translating oncology research into patient care.

As part of its commitment to social accountability, the Mater provides funding for the Mercy Foundation. The Foundation was established by the Sisters of Mercy to provide financial and moral support for people who want to work together creatively for the elimination of poverty and injustice.

Accredited by the Australian Council of Health Care Standards, the Mater is recognised for its high quality and compassionate care, reflecting the core values of the Sisters of Mercy and the Sisters of Charity.
