
St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney was established in 1857. It is a teaching hospital of the University of New South Wales (UNSW) with academic affiliations with the Australian Catholic University, Sydney University, the University of Technology, Sydney, Notre Dame University and the University of Tasmania.
In 2007, St Vincent's Hospital will celebrate its 150th anniversary. Operating as part of SV&MHS, St Vincent’s Hospital is recognised as an affiliated health organisation under the NSW Health Services Act. A Memorandum of Understanding between the Hospital, the South Eastern Sydney Illawarra Area Health Service and the NSW Minister for Health defines the role and funding of St Vincent’s within the NSW public health system. As a public teaching facility St Vincent’s Hospital provides a comprehensive range of medical, surgical and diagnostic services on an inpatient, outpatient and community basis and has established a reputation for excellence in teaching, research and clinical care. Through a formal agreement, St Vincent ’s Hospital also manages the Sacred Heart Hospice which provides sub-acute services in the area of palliative care and rehabilitation and radiotherapy services. |

Priding itself on its patient-centred care and its treatment of each patient with dignity and respect, St Vincent’s provides care to those from within its local community as well as those from elsewhere in NSW and beyond. The Hospital is recognised internationally for its expertise in a number of specialty areas including cardiac surgery (heart and heart/lung transplantation), haematology (bone marrow transplantation) and immunology (particularly HIV medicine), with these services delivering patient outcomes that are equal to or better than international benchmarks. In serving its diverse local community, St Vincent’s has also developed a range of highly regarded community services, including those in mental health, alcohol and drug, diabetes and generalist community health areas. Many of these services have been developed to respond to areas of specific need within the local community, particularly the needs of the homeless. The Hospital’s investment in research and teaching is significant. |

Through the work of the Centre for Immunology and the St Vincent’s Hospital/University of New South Wales Research Groups, the Hospital is renowned for its ground-breaking clinical and applied research activities. Research into the aetiology, pathogenesis and management of cardiovascular, oncology and immunology type diseases are key focal areas for the Hospital. Through its university affiliations, St Vincent’s continues to make a major contribution to the training of health professionals in medicine, nursing and the clinical support areas, and those trained at the Hospital can be found in leadership positions throughout the world. |

Housed in first-class facilities on the Darlinghurst Campus, St Vincent’s Hospital is colocated with the Sacred Heart Hospice, St Vincent’s Private Hospital and St Vincent’s Clinic, enabling patient access to a broad range of primary through tertiary services and the choice of public or private health care in a single location.
Also housed on the Darlinghurst Campus are the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Unit and the National Centre in HIV Epidemiology & Clinical Research, all of which are affiliated with St Vincent's Hospital and contribute to its excellence in research, teaching and clinical care.
